While starring as Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel television series from 2006 to 2011, she became well-known as a teen idol. Hannah Montana achieved two number one and three top-five soundtrack positions on the Billboard 200, in addition to the top-ten U.S. Billboard Hot 100 single “He Could Be the One.” During his first solo career, Cyrus released two teen-friendly pop rock number-one albums in the United States, Meet Miley Cyrus (2007) and Breakout (2008), which featured the US top-ten singles “See You Again” and “7 Things.” The lead single from the 2009 extended play The Time of Our Lives, “Party in the U.S.A.” became one of the best-selling singles in the country and was awarded a diamond certification by the RIAA. The play itself peaked at number two in the United States. The country pop ballad “The Climb,” which Cyrus also released, peaked at number four. In an attempt to change perceptions of her, she experimented with dance-pop on her third album, Can’t Be Tamed (2010). Though the album’s title track only made it to the top ten in the United States, reviews were mixed.

After a break, Cyrus released her fifth number-one album, Bangerz (2013), an R&B and hip-hop infused record that marked her mature and provocative musical shift. It brought Cyrus her first Grammy Award nomination and featured the top-five single “We Can’t Stop” and her first number-one song in the United States, “Wrecking Ball.” With her follow-up, the free album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015), she dabbled in psychedelic music; with Younger Now (2017), she embraced country pop, producing the U.S. top-ten single “Malibu”; and with the EP She Is Coming (2019), she incorporated trap. The most common description of Miley Cyrus is that she is a pop singer with a rock influence. In addition, her work has touched on a wide range of other genres, such as psychedelic, hip hop, country, and teen pop. Cyrus has stated that her greatest inspiration was Elvis Presley. She has also mentioned Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Joan Jett, Lil Kim, Shania Twain, Hanson, OneRepublic, and Britney Spears as influences, along with Lana Del Rey, Dolly Parton, Timbaland, Whitney Houston, and Christina Aguilera. Cyrus has been characterized as primarily a pop artist since the start of her career. Her debut studio album, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, was praised for having a pop-rock and bubblegum pop sound, much like her “Hannah Montana” releases. With the release of Breakout (2008), a record that saw Cyrus experimenting with different genres, Cyrus hoped that it would help her break away from this sound. Cyrus was quoted as saying, “I just hope this record showcases that, more than anything, I’m a [song]writer.” Cyrus co-wrote eight of the album’s songs. The lyrics of the songs on her early releases discuss relationships and love.

Although her vocals were previously described as alto with a “Nashville twang” in both her spoken and singing voice, Cyrus actually has a mezzo-soprano range. Her voice has a unique raspy quality that makes it sound like Pink or Amy Winehouse. Her vocals on “Party in the U.S.A.” (2009) have belter refrains, and those on “Obsessed” (2009) are characterized as “husky”. Country music is featured on releases like “The Climb” (2009) and “These Four Walls” (2008), which highlight Cyrus’s “twangy vocals”.] With “Fly on the Wall” (2008), Cyrus dabbled in an electropop sound; her third studio album, Can’t Be Tamed (2010), took the genre even further.

Before it was finished, rock elements were supposed to be included, and Cyrus stated that it might be her last pop album when it was released. The songs on the album express Cyrus’s wish to be independent in both her personal and professional lives. During a break from music, she started working on Bangerz (2013), which she later described as having a “dirty south feel” before it was released. The album’s use of synthpop and hip hop was noticed by critics. The songs on the album tell the story of her failed relationship with Liam Hemsworth in chronological order. “A little psychedelic, but still in that pop world” was how Cyrus characterised Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015). Britney Spears and Metallica were two of Cyrus’s main inspirations for her rock-influenced album Plastic Hearts.
