Swift signed a recording contract with Big Machine Records in 2005 and started writing songs professionally at the age of 14. Starting with her self-titled album in 2006, she released six studio albums through Big Machine, four of which were for country radio. The singles “Love Story” and “You Belong with Me” from her subsequent album, Fearless (2008), which explored country pop, propelled her to notoriety. While Red (2012) experimented with electronic elements and included “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” Swift’s first Billboard Hot 100 number-one song, Speak Now (2010) incorporated rock influences.
With 1989 (2014), a synth-pop album supported by the number-one singles “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” and “Bad Blood,” she broke away from her country image. The hip-hop-influenced Reputation (2017) and its number-one single “Look What You Made Me Do” were inspired by media scrutiny.
Swift’s pop album Lover and autobiographical documentary Miss Americana were both released in 2019 and 2020, respectively, following the signing of a new contract with Republic Records in 2018. She explored chill-out genres on Midnights (2022), explored indie folk and alternative rock on Folklore and Evermore from 2020, and released four re-recorded versions of her first six albums under the name “Taylor’s Versions” after a disagreement with Big Machine. Records were broken by the albums and the number-one singles “Cardigan”, “Willow”, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” and “Anti-Hero”. Swift started her biggest concert tour, the Eras Tour, in 2023. Additionally, she has directed movies like All Too Well: The Short Film (2021) and music videos.
Swift is one of the best-selling musicians, the most-streamed female artist on Spotify, and the only act with five albums that had first-week sales of over one million copies in the US. She has sold over 200 million records worldwide. She has appeared on lists like the Time 100, the Billboard Greatest of All Time Artists, the Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, and the Forbes Celebrity 100. She has won 101 Guinness World Records, 40 American Music Awards, 29 Billboard Music Awards, 23 MTV Video Music Awards, three IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year awards, 12 Grammy Awards (including three Album of the Year wins), a Primetime Emmy Award, and 29 Billboard Music Awards. Swift, who has received accolades like Woman of the Decade and Artist of the Decade, is a supporter of women’s empowerment and the rights of artists.
Swift has been called a “music chameleon” for experimenting with different musical genres and evolving as an artist. Prior to the release of her fourth studio album, Red, in 2012, she identified herself as a country musician. Although country radio was encouraged to play her albums, critics noted that they featured a wide range of pop and rock genres. After 2010, they noted that Swift’s melodies are firmly rooted in pop music and that the only country music elements are her light twang and a few fiddle, banjo, and mandolin accents. Some remarked that her country music identity was more of a reflection of her narrative songwriting than of her musical style.
Swift’s status as a country musician was well received by the Nashville music scene, but detractors charged that she had neglected her roots in order to achieve crossover success in the mainstream pop market. Red’s eclectic pop, rock, and electronic styles fueled a more heated discussion among critics, to which Swift replied, “I leave the genre labeling to other people.”
